In Praise of Shame

Not much of a man, are you?

My partner’s father, a local sheriff, berated me at his dinner table for not knowing enough about vehicle maintenance. My lack of interest in cars does not define my identity. Made me feel alienated, marginalized, and intimidated. (via microaggressions)

This is how much I know about cars: my friend drove me to the shop in his mum’s very fancy expensive-looking convertible the other day and when I told my dad about it and he me asked what type of car it was, I said “… a cream coloured one?”

People often try to attribute my lack of knowledge on “masculine topics” such as cars, video games and sport (anyone else glad that the cricket world cup is over? My dad is a big cricket fan and we only have one TV in our apartment, I wasn’t thrilled) to me not really being trans. It’s so, so frustrating.
