In Praise of Shame: When people (especially teenagers) self-diagnose themselves

yea i have major depression, schizophrenia, super duper anxiety disorder and grade 892 derpression

I feel like it kind of invalidates my condition when people do that. If you really feel that way, see someone who can diagnose and help you.

I really agree with inpraiseofshame here. There will always be trolls who abuse this, but I really, really hate the superiority complex of official diagnosees. A condition is a condition, and different doctors may very well give you different diagnoses. Sometimes you just know on a visceral level that something is different about you, and even just reading a Wikipedia page on a syndrome that matches most of what you have can be life-affirming, especially if you’ve struggled with it for years. I’m officially diagnosed with autism but self-diagnosed with OCD and subsyndromal SAD, but I see them all as equally valid in my mind. While I may have been guilty in the past of vaunting my Aspie diagnosis as some sort of badge of honor, what’s important to me is what I feel at any given moment, not how many boxes I can check off on any particular arbitrary list of symptoms.

^ This. I feel like people put too much emphasis on an official diagnosis, as though it’s the diagnosis that makes you really have x, when in fact a diagnosis is just attaching a label to a particular set of symptoms which make up the condition itself. Also, you know, medical practitioners can sometimes *gasp* be wrong, contrary to popular belief.
