In Praise of Shame: When people are really insistent about being called "English" instead of "British", it sets off alarm bells in my head.
This rant is mostly inspired by the recent census which had a question about national identity.
So, people who insist that they’re English usually defend this insistence by saying something like, “you’d never catch a Welsh/Scottish person calling identifying as British before Welsh/Scottish!” Or,…
I have actually had discussions along these lines, when I remind people that the Welsh etc. generally do not identify as English/British and I just get a chuckle in response (ESPECIALLY if it’s specifically the Welsh and not the Irish or Scottish). Gah.
Um yeah I wouldn’t suggest referring to a Welsh person as English. Just no.
